Webi've personally always used radiant. for quake 1 i would recommend getting netradiant version 1.5. tried other versions but had issues creating and compiling maps. netradiant works for quake 1-3. i've tried trenchbroom but it's a totally different approach. it didn't work for me but if you're new to editing i would definitely give it a try.
